Detailed anthropometric data of pregnant women have been collected and used in the development of a computational model of the pregnant occupant model "Expecting". The model is complete with a finite element uterus and multi-body fetus, which is a novel feature in the models of this kind. The computational pregnant occupant model has been validated and used to simulate a range of impacts. The strains developed in the utero-placental interface are used as the main criteria for fetus safety. Stress distributions due to inertial loading of the fetus on the utero-placental interface play a role on the strain levels. Inclusion of fetus model is shown to significantly affect the strain levels in the utero-placental interface. This series of studies has led to the design of seatbelt features specifically for the pregnant women to enable them use the seatbelt correctly and comfortably.
Falltests zur Untersuchung der Belastungen von Dummys beim Aufprall auf den Boden, Teil 1 und 2

Beim Zusammenprall eines Motorrads mit einem Pkw unterscheidet man in der Unfallforschung sowohl den Erstanprall des Motorradfahrers an den Pkw als auch den Sekundäraufprall des Motorradfahrers auf dem Boden. So genannte Full-Scale-Crashtests mit Dummys haben beim Erstanprall gezeigt, dass Motorradfahrer durch Airbags potenziell geschützt werden können. Bei den entsprechenden Unfallsimulationen wurde jedoch im weiteren Bewegungsablauf beim nachfolgenden Sekundäraufprall auf dem Boden festgestellt, dass relativ hohe Belastungen auf den Dummy einwirken. Es stellt sich hierbei jedoch die Frage, ob die üblicherweise für Lasteinwirkungen im Falle eines Erstanpralls entwickelten und validierten Dummys die bei einem Sekundäraufprall auf einen Motorradfahrer einwirkenden Belastungen hinreichend genau wiedergeben können. Dazu wurden die Belastungen eines Dummys beim Aufprall auf den Boden untersucht, um das Verletzungsrisiko eines menschlichen Motorradfahrers einschätzen zu können. Im Dekra-Crash-Test-Center wurden vier verschiedene Aufprallsituationen mit einem Hybrid III Dummy durchgeführt, wobei diese Tests an eine andere Testreihe angelehnt sind, die bereits am US-amerikanischen Institut "Dynamic Research International" (DRI) durchgeführt worden waren. Nach der Erläuterung des Testaufbaus und seiner Durchführung wird detailliert auf die gemessenen Verzögerungsbelastungen des Dummys eingegangen. Hierbei geben zum einen Tabellen eine Übersicht über charakteristische Messwerte zur Quantifizierung der maximalen Belastung des Dummys, zum anderen veranschaulichen Bilder die zugehörigen zeitlichen Verzögerungsverläufe in Becken, Brust und Kopf des Dummys. Der Artikel schließt mit einer Interpretation der Versuchsergebnisse und gibt einen Ausblick auf den weiteren Untersuchungsbedarf.
Im Beitrag wird über Rissbildungen in orthotropen Fahrbahnplatten, die im "Schubzahn" des Querträgerstegblechs von den Anschlussschweissnähten trapezförmiger Längsträger ausgehen, berichtet. Der Rissausgangspunkt liegt im Bereich der Ausnehmung des Querträgersteges für die durchlaufenden Längsträger. Durch Optimierung der Querträgerausnehmung und örtliche Verstärkung (Aufpflasterung) des Querträgerstegblechs im Bereich des Schubzahnes soll eine dauerhafte Instandsetzung der aufgetretenen Schäden ermöglicht werden. Durch genauere numerische und versuchstechnische Untersuchungen soll diese Aussage untermauert werden. Einzelheiten der bereits durchgeführten Untersuchungen werden mitgeteilt.
Among European Countries, Spain first issued a Standard, UNE 135900:2005, further updated in 2008, that deals with homologation and effectiveness evaluation of road restraint systems components designed to reduce harm for bikers impacting on them. An in depth analysis and critical review of this standard is reported in this paper. Beside a close examination of the standard requirements, numerical models of the crash test stated by the standard have been set up and simulated to study the effects of slight speed and approach angle variations on test results, remaining within tolerance gaps allowed by the standard. Model were validated against experimental data. Together with the expected increasing severity of the impact according with speed, a strong influence of approach angle on injury parameters was found. Possible improvements to the norm, in order to make it more robust, are suggested.
For a number of EU regulatory acts Virtual Testing (VT) is already allowed for type approval (see Commission Regulation No. 371/2010 of 16 April 2010 amending the Framework Directive 2007/46/EC). However, only a very general procedure on how to apply VT for type approval is provided. Technical details for specific regulatory acts are not given yet. The main objective of the European project IMVITER (IMplementation of VIrtual TEsting in Safety Regulations) was to promote the implementation of VT in safety regulations. When proposing VT procedures the new regulation was taken into account, in particular, addressing open issues. Special attention was paid to pedestrian protection as pilot cases. A key aspect for VT implementation is to demonstrate that the employed simulation models are reliable. This paper describes how the Verification and Validation (V&V) method defined by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was adapted for pedestrian protection VT based assessment. or the certification of headform impactors an extensive study was performed at two laboratories to assess the variability in calibration tests and equivalent results from a set of simulation models. Based on these results a methodology is defined for certification of headform impactor simulation models. A similar study was also performed with one vehicle in the type approval test setup. Its bonnet was highly instrumented and subjected to 45 impacts in five different positions at two laboratories in order to obtain an estimation of the variability in the physical tests. An equivalent study was performed using stochastic simulation with a metamodel fed with observed variability in impact conditions of physical headforms. An estimation of the test method uncertainty was obtained and used in the definition of a validation corridor for simulation models. Validation metric and criteria were defined in cooperation with the ISO TC22 SC10 and SC12 WG4 "Virtual Testing". A complete validation procedure including different test setups, physical magnitudes and evaluation criteria is provided. A detailed procedural flowchart is developed for VT implementation in EC Regulation No 78/2009 based on a so called "Hybrid VT" approach, which combines real hardware based head impact tests and simulations. This detailed flowchart is shown and explained within this paper. Another important point within the virtual testing based procedures is the documentation of relevant information resulting from the verification and validation process of the numerical models used. For this purpose report templates were developed within the project. The proposed procedure fixes minimum V&V requirements for numerical models to be confidently used within the type-approval process. It is not intended to be a thorough guide on how to build such reliable models. Different modeling methodologies are therefore possible, according to particular OEM know-how. These requirements respond to a balance amongst the type-approval stakeholders interests. A cost-benefit analysis, which was also performed within the IMVITER project, supports this approach, showing the conditions in which VT implementation is beneficial. Based on the experience gained in the project and the background of the experts involved an outlook is given as a roadmap of VT implementation, identifying the most important milestones to be reached along the way to a future vehicle type approval procedure supported by VT. The results presented in this paper show an important step addressing open questions and fostering the future acceptance of virtual testing in pedestrian protection type approval procedures.
The main focus of the benefit estimation of advanced safety systems with a warning interface by simulation is on the driver. The driver is the only link between the algorithm of the safety system and the vehicle, which makes the setup of a driver model for such simulations very important. This paper describes an approach for the use of a statistical driver model in simulation. It also gives an outlook on further work on this topic. The build-up process of the model suffices with a distribution of reaction times and a distribution of reaction intensities. Both were combined in different scenarios for every driver. Each scenario has then a specific probability to occur. To use the statistical driver model, every accident scene has to be simulated with each driver scenario (combinations of reaction times and intensities). The results of the simulations are then combined regarding the probabilities to occur, which leads to an overall estimated benefit of the specific system. The model works with one or more equipped participants and delivers a range for the benefit of advanced safety systems with warning interfaces.
Since a number of human models have been developed it appears sensible to use these models also in the accident analysis. Especially the understanding of injury mechanisms and probably even injury risk curves can be significantly improved when interesting accidents are reconstructed using human body models. However, an important limitation for utilising human models for accident reconstruction is the effort needed to develop detailed FE models of the accident partners or to prepare the human model reconstruction by running physical accident reconstructions. The proposed approach for using human models for accident reconstruction is to use simplified and parametric car models. These models can be adapted to the crash opponents in a fast and cost effective way. Although, accuracy is less compared to detailed FE models, the relevant change in velocity can be simulated well, indicating that the computation of a detailed crash pulse is not needed. Two frontal impact test accidents that were reconstructed experimentally and using the parametric car models are indicating sufficient correlation of the adapted parametric car models with the full scale crash reconstructions. However, further developments of the parametric models to be capable for the use in lateral impacts and rear impacts are needed. For the PC Crash simulation runs the output sampling rate is too large to allow sufficient analysis. In addition the performance appears to be too general.
This paper deals with possibilities to update existing road tunnels in order to fulfill up to date requirements regarding structural fire protection. Besides the upgrading of tunnels with structural fire protection systems (like e.g. fire protection sheets) there is also the possibility of numerical investigations. In research projects carried out on behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) numerical investigations for the proof of sufficient structural fire protection have been done for common road tunnel types. Additionally the influence of different fire loads and fire durations on the bearing capacity of the structures have been investigate existing tunnels regarding structural fire protection. The research results have also been the basis for a current update of national standards for tunnel construction.
Gemäß Eurocode 1 ist für die Unterbauten von Brücken außerorts eine horizontale Anpralllast von 1500 kN zu berücksichtigen. Gemäß der ZTV-ING ist für die Stiele von Schilderbrücken eine Anpralllast von 100 kN anzusetzen. Im Rahmen des Forschungsvorhabens wurde aufbauend auf einer qualitativen und quantitativen Risikoanalyse sowie der Berechnung der Auftretenswahrscheinlichkeit eine statische Ersatzkraft für ein Anprallereignis anhand dynamischer numerischer FE-Berechnungen berechnet. Die Auftretenswahrscheinlichkeit für P(Anprall mit Todesfolge / km) konnte auf der Grundlage recherchierter Anprallereignisse mit 6,8 x 10-5 / Jahr berechnet werden. Im Rahmen einer qualitativen Risikoanalyse konnte festgestellt werden, dass die Anordnung von Fahrzeugrückhaltesystemen eine deutliche Senkung des Gefährdungsgrades für den Anprallenden und für Dritte bewirkt. Am Gesamtmodell einer Verkehrszeichenbrücke wurden dynamische Berechnungen mit dem Programm Siemens NX durchgeführt. Der Anprallkörper wurde dabei so modelliert, dass der LKW Anprall möglichst realistisch nachempfunden werden kann. Es zeigte sich, dass ein Anprallsockel gemäß Richtzeichnung Riz-Ing VZB 4 eine deutliche Reduzierung des Anprallereignisses in Hinblick auf Geschwindigkeit und einwirkende Masse an die Stütze bewirkt. Die statischen und dynamischen Berechnungen haben zudem gezeigt, dass durch die Berücksichtigung der dynamischen Effekte eine Steigerung der Tragfähigkeit von ca. 90 % durch die Trägheit der Verkehrszeichenbrücke und ca. 50% durch die Dehnrateneffekte zu erwarten ist. Es wird empfohlen die statische Ersatzlast mit H = 100 kN zu berücksichtigen. Der Angriffspunkt der statischen Ersatzlast liegt dabei 1,25 m über OK Fahrbahn. Für die Erhöhung der Querkrafttragfähigkeit und der lokalen Tragfähigkeit der Stütze am Anprallort wird die Anordnung von 2 zusätzlichen Steifen vorgeschlagen. Die beim Aufprall auftretenden Kontaktkräfte zwischen Fahrzeug und Verkehrszeichenbrücke, die um ein Vielfaches höher sind, können mit der so bemessenen Konstruktion mit großen plastischen Verformungen aufgenommen werden, sofern ein Anprallsockel vorhanden ist.
The advent of active safety systems calls for the development of appropriate testing methods. These methods aim to assess the effectivity of active safety systems based on criteria such as their capability to avoid accidents or lower impact speeds and thus mitigate the injury severity. For prospective effectivity studies, simulation becomes an important tool that needs valid models not only to simulate driving dynamics and safety systems, but also to resolve the collision mechanics. This paper presents an impact model which is based on solving momentum conservation equations and uses it in an effectivity study of a generic collision mitigation system in reconstructed real accidents at junctions. The model assumes an infinitely short crash duration and computes output parameters such as post-crash velocities, delta-v, force directions, etc. and is applicable for all impact collision configurations such as oblique, excentric collisions. Requiring only very little computational effort, the model is especially useful for effectivity studies where large numbers of simulations are necessary. Validation of the model is done by comparison with results from the widely used reconstruction software PC-Crash. Vehicles involved in the accidents are virtually equipped with a collision mitigation system for junctions using the software X-RATE, and the simulations (referred to as system simulations) are started sufficiently early before the collision occurred. In order to assess the effectivity, the real accident (referred to as baseline) is compared with the system simulations by computing the reduction of the impact speeds and delta-v.
