APT with the mobile load simulator MLS10 towards non-destructive pavement structural analysis

In 2014 a research program has been started about non-destructive test methods to evaluate the structure of pavements. This task has been given to two research groups - first research group is led by RWTH Aachen University (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule) and the second by University of Siegen. This paper focuses on the initial findings of the running research program. The assessment of the existing infrastructure and its condition will be one of the main tasks during the next years in order to use the available budget for maintenance accurately and efficiently. Therefore, it is necessary to identify possible damages and examine their effects on the road construction. BASt (Federal Highway Research Institute) is using the Mobile Load Simulator MLS10 for accelerated pavement testing (APT) on different types of pavements. In addition to non-destructive test methods, sensors are applied to measure structural impacts. The overall objective of this research program is to develop a non-destructive test method that allows the calculation of the remaining life time and load cycles of pavements. To simulate realistic wheel loads in a short period of time the MLS10 on German full scale standard pavement constructions has been used. The first pavement test section was loaded with 3 x 10 high 6 50 kN wheel loads while the second, thinner pavement test section was loaded with 3 x 10 high 5 50 kN wheel loads. Both loads are equivalent to the pavement design load. Three different strategies have been used to analyze and monitor structural changes. The innovative measurements have been realized by the two research groups to collect data for their models. The RWTH Aachen collected data with twelve geophones aligned in a row parallel to the wheel path. The geophones measure the entire vertical deflection basin of the pavement surface that exists due to the passing real truck wheels. These measurements were done for different truck speeds and at different transverse distances to the wheel path. The University of Siegen collected data by using acceleration sensors on the surface of the road construction. After recording the data they were integrated into displacement signals and evaluated. Additionally to those measurements BASt used conventional equipment to monitor the pavement structure and surface characteristics. The measurements and evaluation tools used for the innovation program have a high potential to validate APT programs in the future. Based on this research it is possible to start further research activities to push the non-destructive evaluation of pavements structures - not only in APT - into an improved direction.

Querungshilfen verbessern die Situation für die Tiere und sind daher dringend nötig. Wenn ein Verkehrsweg ausgebaut wird oder wenn Brücken erneuert oder umgewndelt werden, ergeben sich Möglichkeiten, Querungshilfen einzurichten. Um Lebensraumkorridore über mehrere Verkehrswege hinweg funktionsfähig zu machen bedarf es noch eines durchgreifenden Instrumentes.
The term test procedure refers to a method that describes how a system has to be tested to identify and assess specific behavior or properties by experiments. This also includes the specification of required tools, equipment, boundary conditions, and evaluation methods. Test procedures are an essential tool to check whether desired product properties are present, which of course also applies to the development of driver assistance systems. In addition to development and release testing that mainly is performed by the vehicle or system manufacturer, there are tests with the purpose of an independent product testing that are conducted by external test organizations. These tests are needed for vehicle type approval (for admission to a specific market), in the context of applying the standard for functional safety (in both cases mainly executed by technical services (being accredited as certification laboratory)) or for customer information purposes (by a test institute for consumer protection). The focus of this chapter is these "external" test methods. After a taxonomy of test procedures, the differences between legislation (type approval) and consumer testing are highlighted. Typical tests and the associated test setup, tools, and assessment criteria are discussed, and an outlook toward testing in the near and mid-future is given.
Motorcycling is a fascinating kind of transportation. While the riders' direct exposure to the environment and the unique driving dynamics are essential to this fascination, they both cause a risk potential which is several times higher than when driving a car. This chapter gives a detailed introduction to the fundamentals of motorcycle dynamics and shows how its peculiarities and limitations place high demands on the layout of dynamics control systems, especially when cornering. The basic principles of dynamic stabilization and directional control are addressed along with four characteristic modes of instability (capsize, wobble, weave, and kickback). Special attention is given to the challenges of braking (brake force distribution, dynamic over-braking, kinematic instability, and brake steer torque induced righting behavior). It is explained how these challenges are addressed by state-of-the-art brake, traction, and suspension control systems in terms of system layout and principles of function. It is illustrated how the integration of additional sensors " essentially roll angle assessment " enhances the cornering performance in all three categories, fostering a trend to higher system integration levels. An outlook on potential future control systems shows exemplarily how the undesired righting behavior when braking in curves can be controlled, e.g., by means of a so-called brake steer torque avoidance mechanism (BSTAM), forming the basis for predictive brake assist (PBA) or even autonomous emergency braking (AEB). Finally, the very limited potential of brake and chassis control to stabilize yaw and roll motion during unbraked cornering accidents is regarded, closing with a promising glance at roll stabilization through a pair of gimbaled gyroscopes.
As the data for road weather stations is used for online traffic control within section control systems, it is very important for the efficiency of the traffic control systems to be based on reliable data of a high quality. Therefore, a Test Site for checking the quality of road weather stations was established near Munich in Germany in 2003 and has been operational since then. In close co-operation with all participants (sensor manufacturers, road authorities, German Federal Research Institute, research and consultancy bodies), the overall goal was to improve the sensors" quality as well as to establish methods to detect failures in measurements. Furthermore, several improvements were carried out within the scope of the Test Site using the expertise of all participants and the infrastructure of the Test Site. The developments, reports and results obtained are both significant and helpful for manufacturers, road authorities, practitioners, research and consultancy.
Tunnelleitzentralen übernehmen wichtige Funktionen für die Gewährleistung der Verfügbarkeit des Straßenverkehrsnetzes. ln ihnen werden Überwachungs- und Steuerungsmöglichkeiten von Tunneln gebündelt. Da diese Funktionen durch IT-Systeme gesteuert werden, wird der Schutz vor Cyber-Angriffen zu einer wachsenden Herausforderung. Das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) geförderte Forschungsprojekt Cyber-Safe verfolgt daher das Ziel, Leitzentralen betreiber in die Lage zu versetzen, Gefährdungen durch Cyber-Angriffe besser als bisher zu erkennen und systematisch geeignete Schutzmaßnahmen zu ergreifen.
Bekannte aus der Kraftstoffverbrennung resultierende Stoffe sind durch die Einführung des Abgas-Katalysators zurückgegangen, andere hinzugekommen. Einer dieser Stoffe ist Methyl-tertiär-Butylether (MTBE), der Kraftstoffen als Antiklopfmittel zugesetzt wird. In untersuchten Pflanzen und Böden neben Autobahnen wurde keine messbare Anreicherung von MTBE festgestellt. Dennoch ist aufgrund der hohen Wasserlöslichkeit und Leichtflüchtigkeit von MTBE eine Anreicherung im Regenwasser nicht auszuschließen. Ein Linieneintrag von MTBE ins Grundwasser über den unmittelbaren Straßenseitenraum scheint zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt jedoch ausgeschlossen.
In Germany road tunnels on major roads which are longer than 400 m have to be monitored permanently. For that purpose the tunnels are equipped with a multitude of monitoring and detection systems whose data and messages are transmitted to tunnel control centres. Due to the higher traffic density, the increasing number of tunnels to be monitored and road users" demand of higher safety and security levels, the strains on operating staff of tunnel control centres have continuously been growing. Therefore, innovative approaches have been developed in two recent German research projects: RETISS " Real Time Security Management System, and ESIMAS " Real-time Safety Management System for road Tunnels. Both systems are designed to allow faster and more efficient reaction of tunnel operators in order to maintain the capacity and availability of transport infrastructures but also to improve the safety and security of road users.
Im Projekt ESIMAS - Echtzeit-Sicherheits-Management-System für Straßentunnel - wurde der Prototyp für ein Expertensystem zur Überwachung von Straßentunneln unter Einbezug innovativer Detektionssysteme entwickelt. Das Ziel von ESIMAS ist die Bereitstellung eines ganzheitlichen modularen Ansatzes zur Überwachung von Straßentunneln, welcher sowohl die präventive Ereignisvermeidung, die schnelle Ereigniserkennung als auch die Ereignisbewältigung verbessern soll. Dieser Ansatz geht deutlich über die aktuellen Möglichkeiten der Tunnelsteuerung und übergeordneten Leitsysteme hinaus. Die zukünftige Unterstützung der Überwachung von Tunnelanlagen mit ESIMAS führt zu einem maßgeblichen Sicherheitsgewinn für den Verkehrsteilnehmer, da durch die umfangreichere und genauere Erfassung und Auswertung von Informationen die Verantwortlichen in den Tunnelleitzentralen besser und schneller reagieren können.
Die Ergebnisse der turnusmäßig alle fünf Jahre durchgeführten manuellen Straßenverkehrszählung (SVZ) werden als Tabellen mit differenzierten Kennwerten zur Verkehrsbelastung veröffentlicht. In der Verkehrsmengenkarte erfolgt durch die proportionale Darstellung der durchschnittlichen täglichen Verkehrsstärke (DTV) auf den Hauptverkehrsstraßen visuell ein flächenhafter Raumbezug. Für Autobahnen werden die ermittelten Verkehrsstärken anhand der Entwicklung an den automatischen Dauerzählstellen jährlich fortgeschrieben. Für eine derartige Fortschreibung im nachgeordneten Straßennetz war die Datengrundlage bisher nicht ausreichend. Durch die Fortführung der bei der SVZ 2015 erstmals zugelassenen Kfz-Erhebung mit Seitenradargeräten kann diese Lücke zukünftig geschlossen werden. Ziel ist u. a. die Ableitung regionsbezogener Indikatoren zur Verkehrsentwicklung.
