For more than a decade, ADAC accident researchers have analysed road accidents with severe injuries, recording some 20,000 accidents. An important task in accident research is to determine the causative factors of road accidents. Apart from vehicle engineering and human factors, accident research also focuses on infrastructural and environmental aspects. To find out what accident scenarios are the most common in ADAC accident research and what driver assistance systems can prevent them, our first task was to conduct a detailed accident analysis. Using CarMaker, we performed a realistic simulation of accident scenarios, including crashes, with varying parameters. To begin with, we made an initial selection of driver assistance systems in order to determine those with the greatest accident prevention potential. One important finding of this study is that the safety potential of the individual driver assistance systems can actually be examined. It also turned out that active safety offers even much more potential for development and innovation than passive safety. At the same time, testing becomes more demanding, too, as new systems keep entering the market, many of them differing in functional details. ADAC will continue to test all driver assistance systems as realistically as possible so as to be able to provide advice to car buyers. Therefore, it will be essential to develop and improve test conditions and criteria.
Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Studie zeigen, dass Patienten mit einer unbehandelten Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit/Hyperaktivitätsstörung in verstärktem Maße verkehrsrechtlich auffällig werden und sowohl häufiger Unfälle verursachen als auch Ordnungswidrigkeiten begehen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen weiterhin, dass sich eine medikamentöse Behandlung günstig auf die verkehrsrelevanten Leistungsfunktionen auswirkt und dadurch auch die Grundvoraussetzungen für eine verbesserte Fahrtüchtigkeit und Fahreignung ermöglicht.
The overall purpose of the ASSESS project is to develop a relevant and standardised set of test and assessment methods and associated tools for integrated vehicle safety systems, primarily focussing on currently available pre-crash sensing systems. The first stage of the project was to define casualty relevant accident scenarios so that the test scenarios will be developed based on accident scenarios which currently result in the greatest injury outcome, measured by a combination of casualty severity and casualty frequency. The first analysis stage was completed using data from a range of accident databases, including those which were nationally representative (STATS19, UK and STRADA, SE) and in-depth sources which provided more detailed parameters to characterise the accident scenarios (GIDAS, DE and OTS, UK). A common analysis method was developed in order to compare the data from these different sources, and while the data sets were not completely compatible, the majority of the data was aligned in such a way that allowed a useful comparison to be made. As the ASSESS project focuses on pre-crash sensing systems fitted to passenger cars, the data selected for the analysis was "injury accidents which involved at least one passenger car". The accident data analysis yielded the following ranked list of most relevant accident scenarios: Rank Accident scenario 1 Driving accident - single vehicle loss of control 2 Accidents in longitudinal traffic (same and opposite directions) 3 Accidents with turning vehicle(s) or crossing paths in junctions 4 Accidents involving pedestrians The ranked list highlights the relatively large role played by "accidents in longitudinal traffic", and "accidents with turning vehicle(s) or crossing paths in junctions" (the second and third most prevalent accident scenarios, respectively). The pre-crash systems addressed in ASSESS propose to yield beneficial safety outcomes with specific regard to these accident scenarios. This indicates that the ASSESS project is highly relevant to the current casualty crash problem. In the second stage of the analysis a selection of these accident scenarios were analysed further to define the accident parameters at a more detailed level .This paper describes the analysis approach and results from the first analysis stage.
Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Studie zeigen, dass die Art, wie ein Fahrer mit Belastungen im Straßenverkehr umgeht, in Zusammenhang steht mit seinem Fahrstil und den Fahrfehlern, die er macht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass insbesondere ein konfrontativer Bewältigungsstil die Konfliktneigung im Straßenverkehr erhöht und dass diese Fahrer nicht nur andere belasten, sondern dass dieser Bewältigungsstil auch dazu führt, dass diese Fahrer selbst mehr Stress und Belastungen erleben.
For the determination of the road surface roughness common methods have been established, like Skid Resistance Tester (SRT) or the Sideway-force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine (SCRIM). Both methods are used to measure a comparable and reliable maximum friction potential value and to assess the quality of the road surface. However, the comparison of the measurements under real conditions and the results of measurements with SRT and SCRIM showed only minor correlations. The paper shows the comparison between these standardised methods and real vehicle braking tests and discusses the results.
The current paper reports on the results of a pilot study aiming to investigate the effect of mobile telephone use on the driving performance of 5 amateur and 5 professional drivers. Their driving acuity was tested through a driving simulator. Analysis and interpretation of the results occurred comparing the drivers' driving performance while talking, reading messages and writing a message on the mobile phone (intervention time) with the drivers' driving performance engaged in no activity (control time). The variables affected by the mobile phone were the "steering", the "lane offset" and the "duration of lane offset". Moreover, the drivers involved in a car crash in the last five years appeared to differ from those who were not involved in a crash in both "lane offset" and "following distance". The results of this pilot study will inform the design of a large experimental study on 50 professional and 50 amateur drivers.
Es besteht Einigkeit darüber, dass Blutalkoholkonzentrationen (BAK) ab 0,30 Promille experimentell nachweisbare Beeinträchtigungen der Fahrtüchtigkeit hervorrufen. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll fundierte Aussagen über das Ausmaß und die Qualität kognitiver Veränderungen bei niedrigen BAK (um 0,30 Promille) ermöglichen. Es wurden in einer doppelblinden, placebokontrollierten Studie 16 gesunde männliche Probanden untersucht. Die BAK wurden während der Versuche auf etwa 0,30 Promille eingestellt. Es wurden mittels umfangreicher neuropsychologischer Tests untersucht: das allgemeine Intelligenzniveau, subjektive Beeinträchtigungen, mögliche depressive Symptome, die allgemeine Leistungsfähigkeit, die Vigilanz, die geteilte Aufmerksamkeit, die Reaktionszeit und die Gedächtnisleistungen. Die biostatistische Auswertung erfolgte im 2-Perioden-Crossover-Design. Zusammenfassend zeigen die vorliegenden Ergebnisse, dass bereits bei BAK von etwa 0,30 Promille vor allem kognitive Funktionen, die insbesondere auf die Wahrnehmung und die Verarbeitung visueller Informationen angewiesen sind, vor allem je komplexer und zeitkritischer eine Aufgabe wird, wie etwa die Beherrschung einer kritischen Situation im Straßenverkehr, relevant beeinträchtigt sind.
Do learner gain sufficient braking capabilities at the end of education for collision avoidance?

The paper describes a test design to evaluate the braking behaviour in the course of the driver education. The results show that the braking capabilities increased during the driver education and the learning effects are the same for males and females. The evaluation limit is set to 6 m/s-². At the beginning of education, 50% of the drivers do not reach this limit, although the driver education car is equipped with an emergency brake assist, which is regularly installed in all vehicles since 2009. After the education, 100% of the drivers can reach the limit. The results are mapped to a collision avoidance scenario.
SEEKING is looking for answers regarding electric powered bicycles and their relation to traffic safety issues. Does a cyclist need "E"? Is it as risky as riding a moped or are E-bikes creating conflicts with other cyclists? The project described herein, funded by the Austrian Ministry of Transport, has the aim of seeking answers to these hot topics. The SEEKING-team shows an in-depth investigation of vehicle dynamic sensing, together with subjective feedback of test riders to detect similarities and differences between conventional cycling and E-biking. Following an overview on the international status quo, measurement runs and their analyses are performed to find a set of preventative measures to make (E-)biking safer. A specific focus is the detection of curve handling, stopping and acceleration phases as well as conflict studies on course-based test rides and "real world" tests on cycling paths (naturalistic riding).
Providing effective occupant protection in rollover crashes requires supplying the occupant with a restraint system proven effective in the dynamic rollover accident mode. Preventing ejection and providing restraint sufficient to prevent potentially injurious contacts with both interior and exterior vehicle components is paramount for effective rollover occupant protection. Research has shown that the injury potential can be decreased by closely coupling the occupant to the seat. This paper focuses on the effect of restraint system slack and its relationship to occupant excursion and ejection potential during rollover. Various restraint system configurations are evaluated in rollover-type test environments. A review of prior research is presented prior to presenting new quasi-static vehicle inversion studies conducted with live surrogate occupants. Additionally, dynamic rollover testing utilizing anthropometric test devices (ATDs) is presented. The influence of belt looseness and effects of various restraint designs on the belted occupants' injury potential are discussed.
