Schutz von Kindern im Pkw

Protection of children in automobiles

  • The theoretical and practical means of protecting children in cars were assessed. The investigation included a thorough evaluation of related literature, results from collision testing using child restraint systems and from research into the protection of child passengers in road traffic. Although all children in cars sit in the rear seats, only about one in two is actually held safely in place. Child restraint systems (CRS) are available in sizes to match all stages of a child's growth. When fitted and used in accordance with the regulations, CRS offer optimum child protection. Seat belt restraint systems are being increasingly used for children. Today, if no CRS is available, even small children are fastened securely with the standard seat belt. In summary, the evaluation of the literature, the collision testing and the research into parked vehicles and moving traffic lead to the following conclusions and recommendations for the development of improved protection criteria for child passengers: - Education campaigns must be mounted to further inform parents about the safety measures necessary and available for children. - Even small children should be fastened with the standard seat bell as a minimum precaution. - Basic biomechanical research into child body loading capacities still needs to be carried out. - The testing conditions of the ECE-R44 CRS design regulations must be matched to the actual conditions of frontal collisions. - In addition to safety aspects, more attention must be paid to children's rights to travel in comfort. - Rear seats must be built to at least the same technical safety standards as the front seats.
