Neue Methoden für die Mustergleichheitsprüfung von Markierungsstoffen : Neuentwicklungen im Rahmen der Einführung der ZTV-M 02

New methods for the sample equality test for use on marking substances

  • The investigations have shown that the parameters which, under DIN EN 12802, are to be used for identification purposes, are not sufficient for sample equality tests. Variations in production due to the technology used and the difficulties in taking samples at the work site limit the meaningfulness of these parameters still further. The BASt has therefore tested new identification procedures to substitute or supplement the standard methods. The thermo-gravimetric analysis provides information on the composition of the marking substances via the decomposition temperatures. At temperatures of approximately 10-° C to 1000-° C all decomposition steps become visible and the respective amount can be determined via the change in mass. At temperatures of approx. 350-450-° C it was possible to assign the types of binding agent to the respective temperatures. The concentration of carbonates (from calcite or dolomite) as a calcium carbonate equivalent is recorded through the decomposition stages at above 700-° C. Displacements in the temperature stages may occur with the same materials. In the case of calcium carbonate, this effect was put down to the different concentrations of calcium carbonate in the matrix. Generally speaking there is a good congruence between the results of the standard procedures laid down in DIN EN 12802 and the mass losses of the thermo-gravimetric decomposition stages in comparable temperature ranges. With the thermo-gravimetric analysis additional findings can be used to assess sample equality. The combination of the infra-red spectrometric method and thermo-gravimetric method is a particularly promising possibility for identifying marking substances. With careful preparation of the samples the thermo-gravimetric method is reproducible and produces meaningful identification results. The investment costs for the thermo-gravimetric apparatus with evaluation unit amount to approximately 40,000 €. Approximately 2.5 hours are needed for the analysis and evaluation. About 20 l each of nitrogen and synthetic air (200 ml/min respectively) are required as consumption materials. The fact that the tests are so simple to conduct, the low amount of time and personnel required and the high level of meaningfulness of the results justify these investment costs. The headspace gas chromatography enables solvent-based marking paint to be tested for the solvents used and for the presence of non-permitted, aromatic hydrocarbons. In the case of cold plastics the identification of the binding agent is possible via its monomers. Bearing in mind the findings, sample-taking during applications and production variations, it is also necessary to ascertain the limit value at which the identity of a sample can be accepted as an original sample. The figures in the TP-M \'88 serve as indications for ascertaining the tolerance. Reasons for the tolerances, such as production variations or errors in sample-taking or analysis, are not given. If the experiences made are positive it is aimed to incorporate the procedures into Standard DIN EN 12802. There is an extensive appendix to the original report which contains the tabular representation of the different test and examination results and the qualitative detection of the binding agents and filling material. This appendix was omitted from the present publication. It can be consulted at the Federal Highway Research Institute. References to the appendix have been retained in the report text.
