Medikamente, Drogen und Alkohol bei verkehrsunfallverletzten Fahrern

The effects of medications, drugs and alcohol on drivers involved in road traffic accidents

  • In this study, commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute, the target group consisted of vehicle drivers admitted to one of the participating hospitals in the Hanover area or in the Saar District following injury in a road traffic accident. Participation in the study was voluntary and was not based on selected accident victims. Organization, implementation and evaluation were performed by the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Saarland in Homburg, and the Toxicological and Traffic Accident Research Department at the Hanover School of Medicine. The three institutions involved had examined technical, ethical and organizational questions and legal aspects relating to data protection as part of four preliminary studies (FP 8004/1-4) and had tested out solutions. A total of 630 patients, among them 501 drivers, were examined during the two-year survey period from 1.10.1983 to 30.9.1985. In the case of 57 patients, it was not possible to determine what form their participation in the road traffic had taken. 72 passengers and pedestrians also included in the survey were classified as "non-drivers" and served as a "reference group" for comparisons with the vehicle drivers. Storage of the samples and recording of the patients' personal data was performed by medical staff in the emergency admission wards of the six hospitals participating in this study. A3.1 samples were examined for the presence of medication groups, individual substances, drugs and alcohol relevant for traffic related medicine using sensitive immunological and chromatographic analysis methods.
