N2 - Bitumen is a substance with a complex chemical composition. The selection of the crude oil, used for the production and the type of the refinery process determines the resulting chemical composition and the physical properties of the binder. The main problem of the analysis of bituminous binders is the separation of the mixture of chemical compounds. A variety of powerful analytical methods is available nowadays. Within the limitations of this survey, several appropriate methods are described and their possibilities und limits shown. Generally, chromatographic methods meet the requirements best to cope with this problem. For example, the TLC-FID-method allows the quantitative determination of bitumen constituents, like aliphatic and aromatic compounds, resins and asphaltenes. The classic thin-layer chromatography used for the detection of tar in asphalt concrete is a kind of fingerprint method. Though this method is very simple, the method makes it possible to characterize bitumen very fast. The complete and exact description of the chemical composition of bitumen is limited by the swiftness and efficiency of the analytical methods. Nevertheless, it is possible to gain useful information about the chemical composition of bitumen with comparatively limited effort and expense.
