N2 - In order to be readily identifiable during the day and the night and preferably under all weather conditions, road markings have to bear a high luminance contrast to the road. This is obtained by the addition of approximately 8 percent up to 15 percent of titanium dioxide to the marking material. This material is characterised by a high whiteness, high covering power also in case of thin layered markings, resistance to ultraviolet radiation and a good chemical resistance. Titanium dioxide cannot equivalently be replaced by other, well-priced materials. Thus, a high significance is attached to the determination of the concentration of titanium dioxide in marking materials in the context of identification tests which are part of the entire homologation tests. The analysing method by Rahm being used so far is not precise enough for the purpose of the identification test. An account is given on a new titration method which is able to determine the titanium dioxide concentration in a precise and reproducible way.
