N2 - The report at hand deals with road accidents caused by wildlife in Germany from 1995 to 2002 from the point of view of the German road traffic accidents statistics. The characteristics of wildlife accidents as well as the structure of the road users involved is analysed. Wildlife accidents account for less than 1 percent of the total number of road accidents in Germany and the majority of wildlife accidents happens on rural roads outside built-up areas. Although the share of accidents involving personal injury is high above the average they are less severe. Also, the proportion of single-vehicle accidents is extremely high. Furthermore, wildlife accidents tend to occur mainly in the warmer months of the year in the mornings and evenings at dawn or dusk. The highest numbers of wildlife accidents are usually recorded in spring and autumn (May/October). Particularly the week-end nights are affected. Due to the time and seasonal structure young drivers (18 to 24 years) are more often involved into wildlife accidents than any other age group. Furthermore, the group of road users involved into wildlife accidents consists almost exclusively of passenger car drivers and motorcyclists (96,2 percent). Young drivers are involved in every second wildlife accident with a passenger car.
