N2 - The topic of bicycle safety has already been considered in research projects of different disciplines. In this project, an interdisciplinary approach was pursued to analyze and evaluate bicycle accidents from the perspective of the three disciplines of infrastructure planning, traffic psychology and vehicle technology. In a basic analysis, scientific findings on bicycle safety from the perspective of the three disciplines were first compiled. Based on this, constellations were developed to focus on accidents with selected characteristics. Five relevant constellations were derived. From the database of the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS) a total of 1,125 accidents from 2005 to 2018 could be assigned to these constellations. Of these, 40 selected accidents were subjected to an interdisciplinary analysis. The results showed that perception errors are often the cause of accidents. Perceptual errors are to be found in the access to information (objective availability of the necessary information) and in the reception of information (attentive observation and recognition of all relevant information). A manual for the interdisciplinary analysis of bicycle accidents based on a phase model of the influencing factors and boundary conditions was developed. In this model, the process phases (information provision, information access, information processing, decision, behaviour and behaviour sequence) are assigned to the influencing factors of the person, the infrastructure or the vehicle on bicycle traffic accidents. The analysis guide shows which questions have to be asked to identify deficits in connection with bicycle accidents and to select suitable measures for action. With an exemplary representation of the analysis procedure it was demonstrated, how one sensitizes for effect connections. The developed manual for the analysis of bicycle accidents can be used as a procedure for specific occasions, for example, if the accident cannot be plausibly explained by current methods of road safety work.
