N2 - To estimate the acoustical behavior of road constructions precisely and to avoid unnecessary costs, accurate models are required to calculate the emission and the propagation of sound. Multiple analytical procedures exist to evaluate noise barriers acoustically. However, the acoustic impact of attachments to noise barriers (crown elements to be installed on the top of noise barriers) cannot be generally considered yet. The verification of the acoustical effectiveness of crown elements in the far sound field of a noise barrier next to a real traffic noise source by measurement is an important step towards the future predictability of the immission sound pressure level at the receiver of interest in the presence of attachments to noise barriers. Therefore, aim of the present project was to determine the acoustic effectiveness of a crown element of the company CALMA-TEC installed on top of the existing noise barriers on the viaduct Uttrichshausen by measurement. For this purpose, the emission and the immission sound pressure level were examined before and after the installation of the crown elements under comparable conditions. Subsequently, the difference of the measured sound pressure level was identified. Simultaneously, the traffic data as well as the meteorological conditions were acquired to finally carry out a correction of the immission sound pressure level regarding the traffic situation (sound power) and the meteorological conditions being present at the time of both measurements by means of a suitable sound propagation model. The insertion loss of the crown element resulting at the investigated receivers of interest takes values of about 0.4 dB to 1.7 dB with a standard deviation of about 1 dB. By considering the fact that the installation of the attachments leads to an increase of the height of the wall which is connected to an increase of the effectiveness of the noise barrier, it can be assumed that the intended influence of the attachment on the sound diffraction around the top edge of the noise barrier is negligible.
