N2 - Worn-off tyre particles are one of the main sources of dust emissions caused by road traffic. Estimations of the annual emission in Germany average about t/a, most of it sedimentable dust (103 000 t/a), while only a small part is estimated to be airborne dust. Most of the dust forms deposits on the road surface and near the road. Road runoff, spray water and airborne transport lead to accumulation of this dust on the grassy road bank and the soils near the road. The contaminant content of the tyre wear particles is not well known and there are few data other than those on zinc and cadmium content. In this investigation, material was taken from the tyre tread of 65 car tyres dating from the 1980s to 2005, including a number of common brands and a broad range of applications. The samples were digested completely using a strongly oxidising digestion method for bitumen (IFTA 1998) adapted by our laboratory. The resulting solution is tested for the concentrations of Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn, using ICP-OES, as well as for Cd, using graphite-tube AAS. A thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA, DIN 51006) was performed, giving proportions of total organic content, black carbon and ignition residues. The results show that zinc is added to tyre treads, sometimes in high concentrations, but they also show that cadmium and lead occur in quite low concentrations compared to the Cd/Zn and Pb/Zn ratios common in natural sources. According to the literature and manufacturer information, the emission of copper and lead from tyres had been expected to be a relevant source for these metals in diffuse emissions. Based on the measurements and an estimation of the emitted mass of the two elements, this expectation could not be con-firmed. A critical content or emissions of the other elements could not be found. The chronological sequence of the zinc and cadmium concentrations in tyre treads shows slightly decreasing values since the 1980s and represents the producer- efforts to lower zinc emissions. Decreasing proportions of black carbon and increasing ignition residues reflect the increasing use of new filler materials like silica in tyres. Based on the estimated total emission mass of 111 420 t/a of tyre abrasion particles in Germany, about 1 530 tonnes of highly volatile and 22 000 tonnes of volatile substances are emitted per year. The major component of tyre emissions are rubber and polymer substances (43 000 tonnes) and black carbon (38 000 tonnes). The amount of metals emitted is about 1375 t/a, consisting mainly of zinc. The estimated emission masses of 1205 t/a (Zn) and 180 kg/a (Cd) in sedimentable dust are based on the total amount of tyre abrasion in Germany. This mass includes abrasion from car and truck tyres. The abrasion from car tyres adds up to only half of this amount, it est about 65 000 t/a. The scarcity of information about the composition of truck tyres leads to the expectation of 60-80% higher concentrations of lead and zinc. Thus the data probably represent the lower limit of total emissions in Germany. Recent studies show the good sorption properties of this particular fraction in road runoff. The role of the rubber and black carbon components of tyre wear as part of the organic matter of the particular fraction in road runoff and in roadside soils, as well as its efficiency for contaminant retention should be investigated in more detail. As far as the EU water framework directive is concerned, the efficiency of road banks and drainage facilities for contaminant retention should be verified.
