N2 - The European Statement of Principles (ESoP), initially published in 1999 and revised in 2006, establishes minimum requirements for In‐Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) to ensure the safe execution of the driver's primary tasks. However, significant technological advancements have occurred since its last update, particularly regarding display sizes and the variety of non‐driving‐related functions accessible during driving. Diverse, currently available interaction modalities, such as touchscreens, gesture‐ and voice‐control, present different demands for users and presumably call for a nuanced approach for guidelines on safe interaction design. The objective of the activities documented in this report is to evaluate the compliance of current, state‐of‐the‐art vehicles with the ESoP. It shall be determined whether an update or expansion of its principles would be necessary to align with current technological standards. Within this project, three luxury‐class vehicles (model years 2022‐2023) were analyzed for their compliance with the ESoP as well as additional design guidelines beyond it. The analysis aimed to identify clear deviations from existing principles and provide concrete examples to support discussions. The evaluation was conducted in three steps, using a predefined checklist: (1) adherence of conventional systems to the ESoP, (2) transferability of the ESoP to new interaction concepts, and (3) comparison of the functionality range of modern vehicles with existing principles. Despite some deviations, the analysis shows that the principles of the ESoP are still broadly adhered to for the design of visual‐manual interactions. Furthermore, most of the identified deviations are not considered immediately relevant in terms of safety‐critical distractions or behaviors. The discussion, backed by current literature, of the expert‐based exemplary analysis and the identified deviations indicates that the principles of the ESoP remain effective for designing functions that do not induce critical levels of distraction. The ESoP thus continues to serve as an essential foundation for creating safe control concepts. However, it appears beneficial to expand the ESoP with updated examples and explanations, incorporating technological developments and criteria from newer guidelines. It is further recommended to enhance the collaboration between automobile manufacturers, technology providers, and regulatory authorities to ensure globally harmonized safety standards and continuously improve driving safety by safe design.
