Influence of the void content on the long term behaviour of stone mastic asphalt top layers

  • The influence of different compositions and degrees of compaction on the void content of the finished layer was to be investigated within the scope of this research project on the basis of specimens made of stone mastic asphalt in the laboratory, since this is perceived as an essential criterion for the durability (long term behaviour) of the layer. Stabs with the three actual degrees of compacting 100%, 97% and 94% were produced for each variation of the compositions from which five bodies each were drilled out. The void content, the accessible void content, the water permeability, the resistance to deformation and the tensile strength were determined using these specimens The investigations on void content showed that the requirement for a maximum void content according to ZTV Asphalt-StB 01 was only definitely fulfilled from a degree of compacting of 98% onwards. A minimum degree of compacting of 97% according to ZTV asphalt thus appears too low. The determination of the accessible void content led to a comparison with both the void variables determined after dipping and weighing and measuring. The unsuitability of the dipping and weighing process for high void contents was confirmed in the process. After evaluating the conducted water permeability tests it was found that the risk of water permeability in stone mastic asphalt at a compaction of over 98% and, connected to this, a void content of less than 5.0 Vol.-% can be minimised. The results of the pressure expansion tests showed that a void content from 4.0 Vol-% onwards hardly has an influence on the deformation resistance. Both the 0/8 S as well as the 0/11 S only had a slight resistance to deformation in this case. lt is only from a void content of less than 4.0 Vol.-% onwards or a degree of compacting of more than 99% that an increase in load impulse figures in the inflection point and thus the deformation resistance could be achieved. Based on the results of the tensile tests it was found, that an increase in the minimum degree of compacting from 97% to 98% would not bring about any notable improvement in tensile strength. A void content of less than 5.0 Vol.-% and a degree of compacting of less than 99% would be necessary to achieve this.
